RealSense, a computer-vision and robotics company, has spun out from Intel and raised $50 million in Series A funding, the company announced Friday.
Formerly known as Intel RealSense, the company said it will use the funding to reach new markets and meet global demand for humanoid and autonomous mobile robots, or AMRs, and artificial-intelligence security solutions. RealSense depth cameras are already embedded in 60% of the world’s AMRs and humanoid robots, the company said.
Nadav Orbach, who previously led the development of Intel’s visual-sensing technologies, will serve as CEO of the new company.
“Our independence allows us to move faster and innovate more boldly to adapt to rapidly changing market dynamics,” Orbach said in a statement.
Intel shares were down 0.8% in premarket trading Friday.
The spinout comes as Intel attempts to overhaul its workplace culture, boost productivity, and reduce both operating and capital expenses during what new CEO Lip-Bu Tan has called a “make-or-break” moment. The company will report its second-quarter earnings on July 24.
