Wall Street is already getting ready for the turn of the new year, but investors expecting an extended break from market activity this week may need to think twice.
Here’s what investors should know about trading hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Is the Stock Market Open or Closed on Christmas Eve?
President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week closing all executive departments and federal agencies on both Christmas Eve and Dec. 26 this year. That order doesn’t change anything for financial markets, though.
As is customary, U.S. stock and bond markets will close early on Dec. 24 at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Eastern time, respectively. Over-the-counter markets, where trading is done without the supervision of an exchange, will also shutter at 2 p.m.
Is the Stock Market Open or Closed on Christmas Day?
The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market will remain closed on Dec. 25. Bond markets and over-the-counter markets will also be closed.
Markets will reopen with normal trading hours on Friday, Dec. 26.
Will International Markets Be Open?
The London Stock Exchange, Euronext Paris, and the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong are among the foreign exchanges closed on Christmas Day. Exchanges will also be closed on Dec. 26 in London and Hong Kong, where the day after Christmas is an official holiday.
The Tokyo Stock Exchange and Shanghai Stock Exchange, however, will remain open throughout the week.
Are Banks and Post Offices Open or Closed? What About Private Carriers?
Most banks will be open on Christmas Eve, though they may close early. Customers should check with their local branch.
U.S. Postal Service offices will be open Dec. 24, despite Trump’s executive order. Post offices will be closed on Christmas Day.
Shipping services, such as UPS and FedEx , will be suspended on Dec. 25, with the exception of specialty critical shipments.
How Has the Stock Market Performed Around Christmas?
Traders hoping for a “Santa Claus rally” have history on their side. The phrase refers to stocks rising across the last five trading days of December and the first two of January. That period starts on Dec. 24 this year.
The S&P 500 has risen 14 of the last 20 years during the Santa Claus rally window, averaging a 0.6% gain, per Dow Jones Market Data. However, the index fell 0.5% over those seven days in 2024 and dropped 0.9% in 2023.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has averaged a 0.5% gain during the rally period over the last two decades, climbing in 15 of those years, Dow Jones Market Data show. A 0.4% decline in 2024 snapped an eight-year streak of Santa Claus rallies for the index.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite has a slightly spottier recent history, rising during the rally window in 12 of the last 20 years. The index has dropped during the seven-day trading stretch each of the past four years, dipping 0.7% in 2024.
A year-end rally would be a nice bonus for investors in what has already been a strong 2025 for U.S. equities.
