A new year is around the corner—and some investors may be making resolutions to generate more gains.

For now, many U.S. market participants are sitting pretty, with the S&P 500 up 17% in 2025, the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 14%, and the Nasdaq Composite up 21%.

Trying to make portfolio changes before 2026 kicks off? Here’s what you need to know about trading hours this holiday week.

Is the Stock Market Open or Closed on New Year’s Eve?

The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market will be open on New Year’s Eve and keep normal hours, with the regular session starting at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. Eastern.

Over-the-counter markets will be open, too. Markets for U.S. bonds, however, will close early at 2 p.m. Eastern.

What About New Year’s Day?

All U.S. financial markets will be closed on New Year’s Day, which is a federal holiday. Trading will resume the following day, Jan. 2, 2026, with markets opening at their regular hours.

What About International Markets?

The London Stock Exchange be open for a half-day on New Year’s Eve, but will be shut on Jan. 1.

Euronext markets, meanwhile, will trade for a half day on New Year’s Eve, with the exception of those in Milan and Oslo, which are shut. All Euronext markets will be closed on Jan. 1.

The Japan Exchange Group, which controls the Tokyo Stock Exchange and other markets, will be shut on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Will Banks and Post Offices Be Open?

Federal Reserve banks will be open on Dec. 31 but will be shut on Jan. 1. Customers of major U.S. banks should check New Year’s Eve hours and ATM availability with their local branches.

Meanwhile, FedEx will operate as usual on New Year’s Eve, with the exception of FedEx Express, which will offer modified service. FedEx operations will be largely shut on New Year’s Day, except for its premium Custom Critical service.

UPS will operate on Dec. 31, but with limited service for air and international packages. UPS operations will be largely shut down Jan. 1, save for UPS Express Critical.

How Do Stocks Typically Perform Around New Year’s?

The new year tends to start off on a positive note. Since 1928, the S&P 500 has averaged a 1.2% gain in January, making it the fourth best-performing month of the year, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

What Should Investors Watch for in 2026?

Expect the market to get noisier. Earnings results from the largest U.S. banks—including JPMorgan Chase & Co., which is slated to report fourth-quarter figures on Jan. 13—will kick-start earnings season at large.

As usual, the market wants to see better-than-expected data from major companies. It’s also bracing for the Federal Reserve’s latest interest-rate decision, which is due on Jan. 28. The market wants the central bank to cut rates or indicate that it will likely keep reducing them to help stabilize an ailing job market and slowing economic growth.
